Unity freezing on model import – Solution

One issue I’ve run into recently working with Unity3D 3.5 is when it gets bogged down during the importing asset stage when updating with new assets.  Sometimes the lag is so bad that it will sit there for hours and show little to no progress.  If you find Unity locking up when trying to import, the problem might be Maya trying to do… something.

When Unity stalls out on the importing screen, try opening up the Task Manager (or the Mac equivalent) and check the Processes tab.  Maya likes to use up memory, so try sorting by that to see if Maya.exe is near the top of the list.  If you see Maya.exe and you don’t have it open, try ending the process.  This should stop whatever Maya was trying to do and get the import process moving again.  Once you’ve done this for each model it gets stuck on, you shouldn’t have to do it for those models again.

I’ve had to use this solution several times now and I can’t figure out exactly what’s happening.  It may be related to the types of file it’s trying to import (noticed it on .mb), but I can’t say for sure.  If I can track it down, I’ll update the post.

Hope this helps people out.  It’s a weird problem with a random solution.
